Of Animals and Men / O zwierzętach I ludziach →  This true story was the basis of the feature film “The Zookeeper’s Wife.”

Now, we can learn more about its real-life heroes – Antonina and Jan Żabiński. Before WWII, they ran the Warsaw Zoo, which during the war gave shelter to many people, mostly Jews. This extraordinary tale of courage and great passion is made of archival materials, staged fragments, and testimonies of witnesses and survivors.

The activists Jan and Antonina Żabiński are the subjects of at least two books in addition to the recent movies. Learn more about their courageous acts and history at THIS LINK.

Niedawno mogliśmy zobaczyć tę historię w fabularnym filmie „Azyl”. Teraz możemy poznać bliżej jej autentycznych bohaterów – Antoninę i Jana Żabińskich. Przed wojną kierowali warszawskim zoo, w którym podczas okupacji dawali schronienie licznym zagrożonym, głównie Żydom. Z materiałów archiwalnych, fragmentów inscenizowanych, wypowiedzi świadków i ocalonych powstała niezwykła opowieść, w której na pierwszym planie jest odwaga i wielka pasja, a w tle nieco surrealistyczne spojrzenie na wspólny los ludzi i zwierząt.

Director, game designer, and TV reporter. He graduated from the Faculty of Political Sciences and Latin American Studies at the University of Warsaw, as well as the documentary program Dok Pro at the Wajda School. “Of Animals and Men” is his film debut.
