The Carthage Wind Orchestra, and bands from Glenbard West High School (in Glen Ellyn) and William Howard Taft High School (in Chicago) will join to perform a free concert at the Copernicus Center on Thursday, March 26 at 7:30 pm.
The concert is part of the “Carthage in Chicago” series, highlighting music ensembles from the college in performance at exceptional concert venues in the Chicagoland area, such as the Holiday Concert at Symphony Center.
In conjunction with the Copernicus Center’s mission for education and entertainment focusing on Polish culture, the Carthage Wind Orchestra program will include music exclusively written by Polish composers. The concert will begin with Wanda Landowska’s “Liberation Fanfare”, written shortly after the end of the second world war, and arranged for band by Richard Franko Goldman. Other works on the concert include: “Anthem”, a set of variations on the Polish National Anthem (Jeszcze Polska nie zginęła) by Patrick Burns; “Conductus”, a contemporary setting by Marta Ptaszynska of an early Polish chant; “Military Polonaise”, the well-known piano piece by Frederic Chopin scored for band by L. C. Harnsberger; Witold Lutoslawski’s “Miniature Suite”; and two pieces by Krzysztof Penderecki, his “Lichen Fanfare” and a “Burlesque Suite from Ubu Rex”. The performance of “Ubu Rex” will be the western hemisphere premiere of this work, written in 1991 and scored for band in 1996.
Admission to the concert is free and open to the public.
