2018 marks the 100 anniversary of Poland regaining its independence. Following the First World War and after spending 123 years divided amongst the three neighboring powers, Poland regained its sovereignty on 11 November 1918.

Polish Film Festival in America and The Copernicus Foundation invite you for the screening of a masterpiece of Polish cinema WOŁYŃ / VOLHYNIA. The program is organized in collaboration with the Polish Filmmakers Association and co-financed by Niepodlegla, Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Poland, Polish Film Institute, Adam Mickiewicz Institute of Culture, and Ministry of Culture and National Heritage.

This epic historical drama is set in a small village inhabited by Ukrainians, Poles, and Jews, located in the southwestern part of Volhynia, a region that straddles Poland, Ukraine, and Belarus. Told through the eyes of our heroine, Zosia Głowacka, the story takes place from the spring of 1939 to the summer of 1945, from the outbreak of World War II to the end of the war. At the beginning of the story, Zosia is in love with a Ukrainian boy, but her father has promised her to a rich landowner, a widower, who is much older and has two children. Soviet occupation changes village life, and then the Germans invade. During the year that follows, the Jewish population is brutally hunted down and murdered. Ukrainian aspirations to independence grow even without German support, and conflict increases between the Polish and Ukrainian communities. People start to disappear, and in the summer of 1943 an orgy of murder and cruelty explodes. Ukrainian partisans brutally attack Polish settlements; Polish partisans retaliate with equal ferocity. In this world of hate, Zosia tries to save her children.

PO POLSKU: Epicki dramat historyczny, który rozgrywa się w małej wiosce zamieszkałej przez Ukraińców, Polaków i Żydów, położonej w południowo-zachodniej części tej krainy. Akcja filmu obejmuje okres 6 lat, od wiosny 1939 do lata 1945 roku. Oczami naszej bohaterki, Zosi Głowackiej, obserwujemy toczące się wypadki zapoczątkowane wybuchem II Wojny Światowej. Gdy ją poznajemy, Zosia jest zakochana w ukraińskim chłopcu z tej samej wsi. Dowiaduje się jednak, że ojciec postanowił wydać ją za najbogatszego gospodarza we wsi, Polaka Macieja Skibę, znacznie starszego od niej wdowca z dwójką dzieci. Dotychczasowe życie wioski odmienia najpierw okupacja sowiecka, a niemal dwa lata później niemiecki atak na ZSRR. Przez kolejny rok trwają polowania i brutalne mordy na Żydach. Tymczasem ukraińskie aspiracje do stworzenia niepodległego państwa, choć nie zyskały poparcia Niemców, wciąż rosną. Rośnie też napięcie pomiędzy polskimi i ukraińskimi sąsiadami. Dochodzi do różnych zatargów, znikają ludzie. Do wsi docierają wieści o brutalnych i krwawych zdarzeniach na wschodzie Wołynia. W końcu, latem 1943 roku wybucha pożoga mordów i okrucieństwa. Oddziały UPA atakują polskie osady, a niekiedy Polacy z równą bezwzględnością biorą odwet na Ukraińcach. Pośród tego morza nienawiści Zosia próbuje ocalić swoje dzieci.

ABOUT THE DIRECTOR, WOJCIECH SMARZOWSKI

Director and screenwriter. Born in 1963 in Korczyna near Krosno. Graduated from the Polish National Film School in Łódź from the Department of Cinematography. He also studied Film Theory at the Jagiellonian University in Cracow. He has directed many commercials and music videos. Winner of a great number of awards at film festivals in Poland and abroad.
