Immigration Meeting for Polish Community
Congressman Luis V. Gutierrez discusses Admin Relief With The Polish Community
10/29/2014 ~~ Wednesday
Doors Open: 1 pm ~~ Meeting: 1:30 to 2:30 pm ~~ All Ages
Congressman Luis V. Gutierrez invites the Polish Community to attend a special meeting with him. As you know, Congress has failed to take action on comprehensive immigration reform. Left with no alternative, President Obama tasked Secretary Jeh Johnson of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) with identifying ways the country could cope with our broken immigration system in the absence of reforming our laws. The Secretary has been reviewing actions the Administration could take under existing immigration law, including providing deportation relief to undocumented immigrants with strong ties to the United States.
While we do not know the exact timing or content of the announcement, we are confident that it will have the potential, like the DACA announcement, to help a lot of deserving individuals and families. And we need to be ready for it.
Chicago has always been at the forefront of welcoming and integrating newcomers, and because of this, we believe we have a historic opportunity to set an example and lead the nation in signing up as many new immigrants as possible. At most, we have a few weeks before an announcement is made. Several weeks or a few months after that, sign-ups for the new relief will begin. During this time we need to work together to prepare our immigrant community and to prepare ourselves to make the process as smooth and as easy as possible. After years – or even decades – of living in the shadows, immigrants in our community should feel comfortable and confident in coming forward, getting accurate information and avoiding scams, and applying for administrative relief if they qualify while we stand prepared to help.
Such an undertaking will require much coordination along with the help of advocates, service providers, attorneys, church and labor leaders, educators, and elected officials. We are pulling our Chicago team together to do this historic and important work and we hope you can join us.
